What is glutathione?
Glutathione is a tripeptide made of the amino acids glutamate, cysteine and glycine, present in virtually every cell of the body. It is often called the master antioxidant because of its central role in protecting cells from oxidative damage. Unlike most of the peptides in this catalogue, glutathione is a naturally abundant intracellular molecule, and it is studied for its broad role in redox balance, detoxification and the maintenance of cellular health.
Studied mechanisms of action
In research models, glutathione acts as the cell’s primary antioxidant buffer. Its cysteine residue carries a reactive thiol group that neutralises reactive oxygen species and other oxidants, cycling between a reduced (active) form and an oxidised form. The ratio between these two forms is a key indicator of a cell’s oxidative state. Glutathione is also studied as a cofactor for enzymes involved in detoxification – it conjugates to reactive compounds to mark them for removal – and for its role in regenerating other antioxidants such as vitamins C and E.
